What should proper paint prep include before the first coat?

Start with the surface, not the color

Paint cannot hide loose caulk, damaged drywall, grease, chalking, or soft wood. Those conditions need to be cleaned, repaired, or removed first.

  • Clean and degloss contaminated surfaces
  • Patch, sand, and feather wall repairs
  • Replace failed caulk and damaged exterior wood
  • Prime bare, stained, or repaired areas
  • Mask floors, fixtures, windows, and adjacent finishes

Ask how prep appears in the estimate

A useful written estimate names the prep steps and surfaces. If the only description is 'paint room,' two quotes may not cover the same work at all.
